Certainly they are trained, but to be a warrior is a calling.

We should be forever grateful to our warriors and to their families who are all so courageous.

We should honor our warriors.

Warriors are NOT, as they are commonly portrayed, victims with no where else to go but the military."

Evening and happy hump day...

Would look on me with love and watch me rise again

Who Am I, that the voice that calmed the sea

Would call out through the rain

Evening...

Happy Friday - ready for the weekend?

Tonight's blog is filled with a video package about two 7-10 cavalry commanders meeting Rashid district leaders along with the Dog Company, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment commander to assess the area of operations before assuming authority.

This caught my eye as D Co., 2-2 SCR is Chris' unit. Also, based on this video Chris' unit is handing the baton over to the 7-10 Cav and refitting for their next mission.

Please pray for D Co., 2-2 SCR as they make this transition...

And...

There are a number of photos out tonight on a 2-2 SCR unit operating in the Abu Dsheer district in southern Baghdad. Unfortunately, the actual unit is not identified so it is unclear which squadron from the 2nd SCR these warriors are from. Maybe you can identify them and their unit? Leave me a comment if you will...I am interested.

Maybe someone can identify the young warrior in the lead photo above?

Also, I included some more photos of the 1-2 SCR operating in and around Sadr City...

Finally, I spoke with Chris on Wednesday - he is doing well. We talked through the IED hit on their stryker. Needless to say, the stryker did its job, took the brunt of the explosion and protected all of the warriors inside. As a result, they all walked away...I am thankful to God for his hand of protection over the young men traveling in that stryker. For those who build these armored monsters - thank you!

Chris is anxious to get home and begin his R&R - its been a long time coming. Overall, he sounded good. I enjoyed hearing his voice and spending time on the phone with him. It helped calm the storm in me...

Chris, I love you son and think of you daily. Thanks for the phone call - I really enjoyed it!

"Through the mirror of my mind
Time after time
I see reflections of you and me"

(Reflections - Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Edward Holland, Jr.)

Evening...

As I look back on the photos I have uploaded recently...and especially the ones taken today of 1st and 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment - I am touched by what I see...

However...

In the middle of the political landscape that is underway in our great country...I wonder if we have forgotten what has been asked of these warriors? Is it left to those of us who have a spouse, son, daughter, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, etc....in the fight? Do the others just not care? Tell me I am wrong...

Look at the face of SPC Matthew Wagner above...have we forgotten his sacrifice? I pray we haven't...there is way too much at stake here.

Every day these are the faces that flicker in the mirror of my mind as I pray for Chris and the entire 2nd SCR.

Reflections...who do you see?

Some quick snippets from the info hounds show...once again, Sadr City and the work being done by the 1-2 SCR is quite impressive...

Evening...

Happy Monday - I trust your weekend was enjoyable...

As we maintain our battle rhythm and press on through another week, I am looking at the calendar and counting the days till my oldest son's wedding and Chris' R&R from the streets of Baghdad. We are expecting lots of family to roll in the end of May for the multi-celebration...and we can't wait for the party to start.

Am I a little distracted?

Yep...

As a result, tonight's blog is a little bit of this and that..and some randomness...so, fair warning...

A quick spin around the web with my info hounds has produced more info and pictures on the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment...their work, sacrifice and service all across the Baghdad area continues to be superb.

Maybe you recognize someone in the pictures? Let me know...

Enjoy!

Afternoon...ever wonder why we don't see more photos like the one above on our national news casts? Hmmmm....

For those wondering and asking, still no call from Chris to update us on the IED incident from the other day. However, his pictures continue to flow and they provide a wonderful look at the work of Dog Company, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment. I enjoy the look from their perspective as they patrol the neighborhoods of Baghdad...

Before I leave you with more photos, lets take a quick spin around the web and catch up on the news stories that involve the 2nd SCR. You will note from the articles that they are busy taking care of business all across the Baghdad area.

Spend some time with the stories, if you haven't already, and get a feel for their ops tempo...and we thought we had a hectic week?

Also, note the challenges of getting the Iraqi Army to stand up and take responsibility for their country...can you say grrrrr?

I can...

Enjoy the articles and photos...if you can identify your warrior in the photos leave me a comment on the blog...I am interested in knowing and putting a name with a face. These are our heroes...how can we say thanks?

Text Message From Chris to his Mother

Evening...

Last night, for the first time during this deployment, we had to catch our breath following that short text message from Chris.

Your first thought is to breathe...in and out...to take deep breaths. For those with a warrior in the fight in Iraq you know exactly what I am talking about. As of tonight we are still waiting for the call and details...

Honestly, so many questions ran through my head last night and most of today... but we will cling tightly to the key words in that message..."we're all fine..."

Tonight's blog...

Given the last couple of days, the photos in this blog touch deep in my heart and soul...look in the eyes of America's best...the faces of warriors from Dog Company, 2-2 SCR.

These are the men who cover Chris' six and vice versa...and are with him when an IED goes off or a firefight breaks out...Dog Company...

Tell me what you see and please...pray for Chris and teammates...won't you? I will continue the photos in my next blog and hopefully I will have an update to share on the IED event.

Chris, I love you son...more than words can say. We are praying for you, your safety and for all your teammates. Your photos speak so many words...

Be safe!

Love,
Dad

Silent Tears...

(REUTERS/Erik de Castro (IRAQ))

I can hear myself cry, but nobody else can.

Evening...

It would be easy to avoid writing a blog like this...I almost talked myself out of it tonight...I almost didn't look at the pictures - who would know?

Almost...

Sure, I could just blog about the stories that put a positive face on the war and the work of the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment...and avoid looking at the faces of our warriors from 1st Squadron, 2nd SCR who today grieved the loss of three of their own.

I can't....it is not reality...

I won't...it's not who I am...

So, here is my view - our warriors have to face the loss of a friend, a fellow warrior...straight up. For us to have even a remote chance of understanding what they are experiencing...I believe we too must look...

So if you can summon the courage to look...

Peer into the faces of our warriors in these pictures and see their pain firsthand...lest we forget the price being paid...

Silent tears...crying on the inside...no one said this would be easy, eh?

Father God, give me the courage to stay strong and press on...just as you do all of our warriors who are in the fight.

Chris, I love you son...be safe!

Evening...

The following article, courtesy of DVIDS, is a good look at a time honored tradition of the U.S. Army...

Enjoy the read and continue to lift all of our warriors in the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment up in your prayers...

CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq

As operations continue for Warhorse Troop, 4th Squadron (Reconnaissance and Target Acquisition Squadron), 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, they took a brief pause for a change of command ceremony and bid a fond farewell to Maj. Christopher C.E. McGarry of Pensacola, Fla., and hailed Capt. Marcus Melton of Marietta, Ga., April 2 at Camp Liberty, Iraq.

McGarry relinquished the command he carried for the past twelve months to a long time member of Saber Squadron’s family.

“I was a bit saddened to hand over the reigns of Pale Horse Troop, yet more than ready to accept another command within the Saber Squadron and take charge of Warhorse Troop,” said McGarry.

Many traditions in the Army are time honored events. But none are more enduring or revered as those held by the cavalry. After the guidon is passed and secured by its barer, one of the revered cavalry traditions begins, “Passing of the Saber.”

Lt. Col. Antonio Aguto, of Chicago, who serves as the commander of 4th Sqdn., 2nd SCR, MND-B, dons his riding gloves and draws the saber from its sheath which is no longer in pristine shining glory and passes the saber that shows ware from years of use. He passes the saber to McGarry who salutes Melton as a sign of respect and worthiness to carry on command of the cavalry troop. With the saber held forth right in upward facing palms, the relinquished commander then offers the saber to the new commander who returns the salute bows and kisses the steal he will loyally serve. Once returned to Aguto, the saber is re-sheathed and returned to his chamber where it is secured.

This change of command marks another chapter in the oldest continuously serving cavalry regiment in the U.S. Army today. 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment will celebrate its 172nd anniversary on May 23rd. “From the Swamps of Florida to the Deserts of Iraq, we 2nd Dragoons have lived up to our Motto Toujours Pret (Always Ready),” said Aguto.

The Broken Chain

We little knew that morning,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And though we cannot see you,
You are always by our side.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
(Author Unknown)

Evening...

The photos in tonight's blog tell a simple yet powerful story of the loss our warriors in the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment have experienced along the way in this deployment. It causes me to ask myself...

How much time do they have to grieve?

When will the loss hit home?

Who will be there for them and their invisible wounds?

I wonder...do you?

Storm Clouds on the Horizon...

A fire raged through a market in Sadr City on Monday that was accidentally ignited after smoke was launched to provide cover from sniper fire for U.S. soldiers. The troops established a foothold in a southern swath of the neighborhood.

"But now, a cease-fire that al-Sadr called last August is in tatters and the prospect of more violence looms."

Robert H. Reid, Associated Press Writer

Evening...

The fight is still hot in and around Sadr City and our warriors from 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment are in the thick of it as they work to shift responsibility to the Iraqi Army.

If you haven't seen the NY Times article - Hearing Intrudes in Sadr City, if Power Lasts - give it a read.

Also, the photos (click the slideshow button) tell their own story...

There is also a report from the Associated Press that shows again the complex operating environment our warriors are confronted with in Iraq - US shifts enemy in Iraq

As described in the article...there has been a shift from a Sunni insurgency, to a Sunni-Shiite sectarian bloodletting and now a violent competition for power within the Shiite community.

Where will this all end? Anyone?

Chris, be safe buddy and know that we love you more than words can say...Our prayers surround you and your buddies.

Fallen Angels...

"I was sure by now
That You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say "Amen", and it's still raining"

(Praise You in This Storm - Casting Crowns)

It's still raining...

The "name not released yet" list of fallen angels on the Coalition Casualties website had grown very large over the last few days. I was watching and waiting. Many were from Multi-National Division-Baghdad - which always causes me to pause and wonder. Was I worried? Yes...

Did I wonder if the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment had missing warriors? Yes and my heart ached.

Missing warriors...today it became real for all of us. How much pain can we bear? How many tears will we shed? How many times can our hearts be torn? Someone, anyone?

Whatever it takes...we will press on and hold fast. I will not give up hope...

Read the words. Let the names wash over you and remember to pray for the Lilly and Kazarick families.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones. We will never forget...

Sgt. Michael T. Lilly, 23, of Boise, Idaho, died April 7 in Sadr City, Iraq, when enemy forces attacked using a rocket propelled grenade. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

Spc. Jason C. Kazarick, 30, of Oakmont, Pa., died April 7 in Sadr City, Iraq, when enemy forces attacked using a rocket propelled grenade. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

Tired, Dirty...and Relentless

"A crackdown on the Mahdi Army militia is creating potentially destabilizing political and military tensions in Iraq, pitting a stronger government alliance against the force that has won past showdowns: the street power wielded by the radical cleric Moktada al-Sadr." James Glanz and Stephen Farrell - The New York Times

Evening...

Are the warriors with the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment on your heart and mind? Are you praying for their safety? They are and I am...

Everywhere you look there are articles describing the tenuous situation in and around Sadr City...and the 1-2 SCR is in the fight.

Up north, the 3-2 SCR continues to work in the Diyala province. They have been hunting insurgents since they got there. Do these warriors believe they are making a difference? Read the article below and tell me what you think...

Here is a sample of what the info hounds are providing on the 2nd SCR...

Evening!

Lots to cover tonight on the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment operating in and around Baghdad...let's get to it.

First off, 3rd Squadron continues work in the Diyala province as they uncover more killing fields. Call it what you will but these are sights and sounds that will last for quite some time for these warriors...maybe a lifetime. As in my previous blog on this subject, the article is not for the faint of heart - fair warning. Graves found in Iraqi pomegranate grove

If you haven't seen the CBS News interview with LTC Dan Barnett, Commander, 1st Squadron, 2nd SCR, on the fight in/around Sadr City - spend some time with it. I was impressed with the poise and patience of LTC Barnett and how he handled the questions...especially the one regarding the Iraqi civilian loss of life.

In addition to the video on 1st Squadron, DVIDS posted more photos of 4th Platoon, Company A, 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment in action...

Evening...

We had a short, two line email from Chris...he is well but extremely busy - 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment is taking care of business. Enough said. Those words eased our mind and helped us to know that all is well. Continue to pray for Chris and the entire 2nd SCR Regiment...

On to the rest of the photos we had developed off the two cameras Chris sent from Iraq. Most of these are of Christmas as experienced by the 2-2 in Baghdad, Iraq.

For my good buddies Bob and Steve...check out the first photo below of the makeshift ping pong table at the 2-2 SCR COP in Baghdad. Not bad, eh? What do you think? Could you play on it and compete? Game on?

Chris, we love you buddy - we are so proud of you - we remember!

Evening...

After a couple of intense nights, lets back away a little and do something different tonight...something that will hopefully make you smile a little...

How about a few photos?

Two disposable cameras, sent by Chris, arrived from Iraq yesterday. They appear to cover Thanksgiving and Christmas 2007 for Dog Company, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment while deployed to Baghdad.

Don't hold me to the photo captions...I am just guessing...honest, I am :-)

See anyone you know or recognize?

Part 2 will come tomorrow night...

Chris, I love you buddy. Thanks for pushing the cameras out. We have enjoyed looking at the photos!

Fallen Angel...

The painful, almost debilitating news from Iraq continues to crash down on us...1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment has felt the pain of losing another hero...another warrior.

Lives have forever been changed...

When will it end?

Another Blue Star Service Flag will come down...replaced by a Gold Star Service Flag that will silently hang in a window somewhere in the U.S. Will those who see it recognize what it symbolizes? On the last Sunday in September, 2008 another grieving mother will stand and be honored with so many others who have lost a son or a daughter in war...her loss can never be understood.

There are simply no words to describe this pain...and the mental exhaustion of adding another name to the Fallen Angels Wall for the 2nd SCR. However, I press on as I will never quit or give up hope.

Just as I have done in the past I would ask you to pray for the Candelo family and loved ones...they are hurting beyond belief. I am sure they never expected that knock on the door...

May God surround this family with a love that passes all understanding. We will never forget his service and sacrifice.

Spend a moment and read the words in the announcement and honor his sacrifice by remembering his courage and commitment...

Cpl. Steven I. Candelo, 20, of Houston, died March 26 in Baghdad, when his vehicle was struck by a rocket propelled grenade. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.
